I don’t find it necessary to paint with precision what I see in front of me, because I’m not quite convinced that most subjects are worth it. The experience of something is more lasting than the “something” could ever be. Perhaps because as a kid I moved around a lot, my first big move being from Ireland to Canada, I’ve placed more importance on doing and being rather than on my surroundings. So, I paint the sum energy of change itself, and the emotion and the process, and only rarely will I incorporate a recognizable object.

The style of my current body of work is overtly mid-modern because the hard surfaces, the functional perpendicular construction, the bravado of the acidic colours, all ring true to my sensibilities right now. The intelligent design and lean mid-century aesthetic is indelible on our vision of the future, and so it is as relevant today as it ever was. The idea then is to evolve this work in response to our times, our concerns, our unfolding future.
