| Biography | ||||
“Of the Toronto artists who were just students at the time of the Rayner-Burton-Coughtry ascendancy, David Bolduc is probably one of the best. He makes paintings of startling beauty, saved, usually, from mere decorativeness by the authority of his painterly touch and by the self-consciousness of the allusions to cubist collage and to abstract expressionist paint handling. Typical Bolducs have soft, brushy grounds in resourceful colours, surmounted by what is usually a single image – often a vertical bar or stroke, or a rectangle, fan or grid – most often drawn on to the canvas straight from the tube. Considering that these central images are almost always verticals hanging in the middle of the picture, it is remarkable how various and expressive Bolduc has been able to make them.” - Statement by art critic Gary Michael Dault in the Canadian art book “Vision” |
